U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen bolt action rifle with the Parkhurst loading device, .30-40 Krag caliber, Serial #289162. The rifle is in very good to nearly fine overall conditionwith a 30” barrel with light pinprick pitting at the muzzle having gone to an even brown patina. The rifle incorporates the experimental Parkhurst loading device and is one of approximately 100 rifles and carbinestested by the Ordnance Department with the device. The devices were tested between 1899 and 1902 with firearms within the 288,000-290,000 serial number range. Edward G. Parkhurst developed the device in 1898 inorder to allow for faster reloading, competing with the charger loading 1893 Mauser rifle. Initial trials by the Army found testers could easily fire more than 20 aimed rounds in 60 seconds. The project wascancelled in 1903 with the pending adoption of the new, 1903 Springfield rifle. The bore is fair, the action functions and the markings are sharp on this rare, one of a hundred Krag. Est.: $1,400-$2,800. (C+R).
