U.S. Springfield percussion rifle dated 1850, .69 caliber, 42” barrel, full wood stock, flared iron ramrod; “out-of-the-attic” condition, working action, well worn stock with initials “N.D.B” and “18” carved intothe left side of the butt stock; also “J M” on the left side of stock above the trigger guard; fascinating hand written note provided by the consignor stating “The famous Yankee rifle of the War Between the States (never,if a Southerner, call it Civil War). When Yankee soldiers were quartered at the Howard home during the War somehow this gun was left behind. Whose initials are carved upon the handle? We do not know.
