LIGHTWEIGHT LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 109097. Consignor research indicates that this may be the only known non engraved M1886 rifle with style D factory carving. Bbl. 22" extra light Nickel Steel with ramp mounted Lyman No. 4 ivory hunting front sight with flat top sporting rear sight. Blue finish with case colored hammer and lever. Forearm and straight grip stock of fancy black walnut with hard rubber shotgun buttplate. Stock and forearm have Style D factory carving consisting of fancy borderless hand checkering with delicate hand carved oak leaf and acorn panels. Left side of forearm ahead of action has hand carved letter "F". Inside of top tang w/ assembly # "55". This level of carving is generally seen only on factory engraved rifles. Non engraved rifles with factory carving are exceedingly rare and very very seldom encountered. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum letter stating the following information: "Serial number applied on April 25, 1896. / Type: Rifle / Caliber: 45/70 / Barrel Type: Round / Barrel Length: 22 inches / Extra Light / Nickel Steel / Trigger: Plain / 1/2 Magazine / Fancy / Shotgun butt, Rubber butt plate / Oil Finish / Carved style D / Received in warehouse on January 20, 1902 / Shipped from warehouse on January 21, 1902, Order number 129022". CONDITION: bbl. has 80% dull lightly faded blue showing spots of light corrosion. Action retains 80% bright blue showing edge wear, light scratches with spots of surface corrosion. Hammer and lever retain 40% light and fading case colors mixing with spots of surface corrosion. Original wood finish shows moderate wear with scattered scratches and marks. Checkering and carving on stock and forearm show very light wear with a few flattened diamonds. Buttplate shows small chips around toe area. Smooth sound mechanics. Bore is bright with very good rifling. (01-17953/DS). ANTIQUE. $10,000-15,000.
