UNIQUE AND FINE “C.H. RIGDON” CONFEDERATE
REVOLVER. Cal 36. 2316. For the Confederate handgun collector who wants every model, this is the only Rigdon & Ansley 12 stop revolver with only "CH RIGDON” marking in standard configuration and 100% original, complete and superior condition for a Confederate revolver. It is also the only Rigdon & Ansley with “S.C” surcharge like seen on Leech & Rigdon revolvers in mid production S# range. This revolver also has a dovetailed blade front sight unlike the pin sights seen on all other examples. There are only 4 other guns known marked “C H RIGDON” and it is secondary marked on side flat with “CSA” on top. (1490, 2154, 2180, 2182). This gun has been known since 1979 when it surfaced in Elizabethtown, Tennessee with history that a Confederate carried it. This gun has remained in the same collection since it surfaced in the consignor's world. There is only one other identically marked "CH RIGDON" revolver and it is a unique 5" unserialized “pocket revolver” which also has long history and thought to be Charles Rigdon’s personal revolver and late production. CONDITION: very good overall and excellent for a Confederate revolver. 100% original and authentic including screws. Matching serial numbers are found on every part. Rigdon revolvers are numbered; barrel latch, LL, wedge, frame, cylinder, tang, backstrap, and arbor. A partial penciled number in grip channel “316”. Iron overall has smooth plum patina with minor pitting, brass has mustard colored patina. Grips have hand worn patina with chipped toes. Mechanics are fine, crisp rifled bore. “C H RIGDON” is well defined with a “rebound” of die with ghost first letters, this is seen in the 5” unique example also and often seen in mid-range serial of Leech & Rigdon revolvers. SNs all discerned with scratching over and around number on triggerguard. “C H RIGDON” is easily discerned, as can be seen in photos. Cryptic “W” is found on left side of trigger guard. PROVENANCE: David Crockett, Elizabethtown, TN 1979. (01-17370/JS). ANTIQUE. $25,000-35,000.
