UNITED STATES NAVY VICE ADMIRAL HOPWOOD GROUP.

Admiral Hopwood was born in 1898 & attended public schools in Shamokin, Pa. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy & graduated w/ the class of 1919. From 1919 to 1925, Hopwood served on the USS America, USS Florida & USS Hopkins. He then served in the Department of Ordnance & Gunnery at Annapolis. After returning to sea duty in 1927, he was assigned to the USS Hart until 1930, when he transferred to the USS Ramapo. He then returned to the United States & served as Aide to Commandant of Fourth Naval District. He then served on the USS Indianapolis until 1934 when he joined the staff of Rear Admiral Hepburn on the Flagship USS Detroit. He remained in that position until assuming the command of the Scouting Force, Pacific Fleet, hoisting his flag on the USS Indianapolis. Hopwood served in various capacities until 1940 when he returning to the Bureau of Naval Personnel & served in the Records Section until 1942 when he joined the Joint Staff Planners. During 1944, he was aboard the Light Cruiser USS Cleveland, commanding the ship until mid 1945. Hopwood continued his Naval career until retirement in 1960 as Commander In Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The group of items below all represent pieces from Admiral Hopwood’s exemplary service.
1) Vice Admiral Hopwood’s 3 star Admiral’s Flag from the USS Helena. The flag has 3 lg. white stars on a blue field.
2) Admiral Hopwood’s battle flag from the USS Cleveland. The flag is a 48 star American flag & is a bit worn w/ scattered staining.
3) A beautiful silver plated humidor presented to Captain Hopwood while serving as Director of Planning & Control on the Bureau of Naval Personnel 1941-1944.
4) A presentation wooden box of poker chips given to Commander Hopwood from the Repair Force of the USS Melville, 1939-40. A beautiful wooden box containing scores of poker chips in various colors housed in individual racks.
5) A framed letter to Hopwood from President Dwight D. Eisenhower thanking Hopwood for a “boat ride”.
6) A variety of ephemera related to the career of Admiral Hopwood including but not limited to photographs, change of command ceremony pamphlets, photo albums from a visit to Korea, still photos & more. CONDITION: all items show light wear unless otherwise noted. Humidor is tarnished but undamaged. (02-15639/BF). $1,200-1,500.
