UNUSUAL SHORT BARRELLED CIVILIAN BLUNDERBUSS WITH

LOCK MARKED "T. PAGE". Cal. 1.9 at muzzle. NSN. It has a 12" flared iron bbl. w/ wedding ring turnings at center & rear, stamped w/ London black powder proofs & bbl. maker's initials "I.R." under a crown (mostly likely John Rimes). Lock w/ rounded plate fitted w/ serpentine cock & integral rnd. pan, bridled friction frizzen & feather spring w/ dbl. spear finial. There is some well cut scroll engraving at rear of lock & "T. Page" (Most likely a gun maker of this name working in Norfolk, PA between 1763-65). is engraved in front of cock. Stock extends to muzzle & is pinned to bbl. & features "handrail" comb & raised carving around tang. Stock is brass mounted, having trigger guard w/ husk finial, fancy crest plate at top of grip & relief cast long sideplate featuring hunting dogs & hunters w/ their game. A period sling loop is affixed to left side at rear of sideplate. Steel ramrod mounts through fancy turned pipe & matching thimble. It appears butt has been shortened somewhat & a newer sheet brass buttplate has been installed. CONDITION: good. Iron parts show mostly smooth gray to brown patina. Wood w/ old refinish. Brass cleaned, now beginning to tone. Bore is lightly rusted. Lock is good. There are repaired cracks at bottom of lock & w/ some missing wood at top. It appears bbl. channel has had added wood in front of thimble, but this work was done a very long time ago (most likely during period of use). A neat little gun w/ a great look. (01-20992/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,800.
