US CIVIL WAR SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1855 RIFLE MUSKET.
Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40", marked on top left flat w/ "VP" eagle head proof & marked on top "1857". Ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. Ladder marked "U.S.". Stud type front sight. These arms were mfg. w/ the short lived Maynard tape primer mechanism. Lock which is equipped w/ a fully functional tape primer contains a partial roll of the primers which resemble the paper caps used in toy guns. The primer door which is hinged on the lockplate is marked w/ the spread winged eagle. The front of the lockplate has "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and the tail of the plate is dated "1857". Walnut stock is marked on the left panel with 2 illegible inspectors' cartouches. Buttplate marked "U.S." on the tang. Forend equipped w/ 3 solid flat bands retained by springs. Correct brass forend tip. Correct tulip headed ramrod w/ "swell". CONDITION: stock has vintage restorative finish w/ softening of edges & has wear, staining & scattered handling marks throughout while retaining a good appearance. Metal has been cleaned, has wear & peppery oxidation & is returning to a slightly gray appearance. Bore has strong lands & a degree of shine w/ scattered pitting throughout. (01-23836/RW).
