RIFLED MUSKET. Cal. 58. S# NSN. Bbl. 40". The unmarked bbl. has no visible rifling. Many of these muskets were converted to smooth bores after the Civil War to make them salable as inexpensive shotguns. 2 Leaf folding rear sight. Stud type front sight. Model 1861 style hammer. Beveled lockplate w/ eagle & U.S. Trenton. Tail of lockplate is dated 1863. Forend has 3 flat bands retained by springs. Replacement tulip headed ramrod. U.S. marked buttplate. Walnut stock. Faint boxed inspector's mark on left panel over trigger guard. CONDITION: stock has very worn appearance w/ staining & numerous handling marks. Cracks appear at top of left panel behind breech plug tang, behind lockplate, ahead of lower band spring. Forend has long narrow missing strip of wood on right side between middle & upper bands. Metal is turning overall gray & patina w/ oxidation & light pitting throughout. Breech plug tang has distorted sides due to improper attempt at removal. Dark oxidized pitted bore. (01-23340/RW). ANTIQUE. $300-500.
