Dated 1864, 1864 saw the heaviest and bloodiest fighting of the American Civil War. the principal sword used by cavalry troopers during the Civil War and Indian Wars that followed. It was manufactured by Ames. The 34 1/2' curved blade has a 27 1/2" broad fuller and a 18' inch narrow fuller. Blade has much original polish and a few minor patches of light staining and scuffing, no nicks. The obverse ricasso is stamped "U.S.", "1864", "C.E.W." (Charles E. Wilson, a United States Ordnance Department sub-inspector who inspected and accepted swords for the federal government between 1846 and 1865). in three lines while the reverse ricasso is maker-marked "AMES MFG. CO." over "CHICOPEE", in arched block letters. The original leather buffer-pad is present at the guard. The wood grip is covered in black leather and wound with twisted brass wire, all original with some flaking/wear to the leather. The domed, brass pommel cap has a small "JH" (Federal ordnance sub-inspector mark referring to John Hannis or Joseph Hannis. He inspected US martial swords, including Ames Manufacturing Company sabers). The brass, half-basket guard consists of a knuckle-bow with two branches on the obverse side meeting an oval counterguard. All brass components have a nice, aged patina and are in excellent condition. The two-ring scabbard is dark steel, with two shallow dents between the rings, some pitting on the drag and lower end.
