US MARINES CORPS 5TH BATTALION, 10TH MARINE

REGIMENT FLAG. 50” x 64” double applique embroidered with gold fringe, WW2. 10th Marine Regiment which is the artillery unit of the 2nd Marine Division. This battalion was an original component of the regiment from its inception as the 3rd Battalion of the 10th Regiment. The unit had their baptism of fire on Guadalcanal in August 1942. After the taking of Tarawa in 1943, the battalion was redesignated as 5th Battalion, 10th Marines but for the Saipan Campaign of 1944 they were renamed as the 2D 155 MM Howitzer battalion. At the end of the war the battalion was deactivated. This dates flag to 1943-1944. In 1954, the 5/10 was reactivated and took part in preparing for action during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. In 1978, the battalion was officially redesignated as the 5th Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. The unit served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991, in Haiti in 1994 and again in the war with Iraq in 2003. The battalion served twice in Afghanistan, once operating as the Brigade Headquarters Group for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and were back again off and on between 2007 and 2010.
