US MODEL 1861 E. ROBINSON CONTRACT RIFLE
BARREL 40". CALIBER .58. Made in New York 1863-65, contract 30,000 Springfield type rifles. Lock is stamped E. ROBINSON with US and eagle and dated 1864. Barrel breech is stamped 1863 with VP eagle proofs on left side. The left side of stock has in in-letted brass Maltese cross and a Civil War Token "Union Forever" The cross was the insignia for the Union Army 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions, whose numerous battles included Gettysburg. Rifle still sports a period single frog leather sling that is intact. Standard features include 3-bands, two leaf folding rear sight, full length walnut stock and steel ramrod. Condition. Metal is a smooth brown patina,. Stock is in excellent shape with usual war dings. Bore is dirty. Nipple is broken in half. ANTIQUE
