RIFLE & MAYNARD TAPE PRIMER BY FRANKFORD ARSENAL USING REMINGTON LOCK. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42”. Over 20,000 muskets were converted this way. Bbls. were rifled w/ 3 shallow grooves, new breech sections w/ bolsters were installed, new locks w/ Maynard tape priming device were supplied by Remington. Left side of the bbl. is stamped “N.J”. (2,000 of these muskets were supplied to the state of New Jersey). Remington lock is marked w/ Ilion address & “1858” date. New breech is also dated “1858”. Walnut stock w/ low comb is fitted w/ triggerguard w/ rounded finials & steel buttplate marked “US” on tang. Stock attaches to bbl. w/ 3 spring retained bands. Retaining springs are in front of the center & rear band. Sling loops are attached to a boss on triggerguard bow & center band. A button head ramrod is present. Inspectors mark “GS” (?) is behind the sideplate. CONDITION: very good. Iron parts cleaned gray/brown. Stock w/ what appears to be the original finish has numerous marks & dings. There are no major wood losses noted. Bore is good, relatively shiny. Lock is crisp. Priming system operable. (01-20137/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
