US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1881 TRAPDOOR FORAGER SINGLE

SHOT SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 ga. S# 1348. Total of 1,376 were produced for use by government hunters and scouts at western military outposts at the rate of 2 per company. Last known issue was in Alaska in 1906. Bbl. 26" unmarked round with 3/16" high brass front bead. Model 1879 action with 1881 dated low arch case colored breech block. Sporter style stock is fashioned from cut down Civil War musket stock. Left side has a "SWP" cartouche with 1885 date. Toeline of stock has circle "P" firing proof behind smaller indistinguishable marks. CONDITION: fine. Barrel, lock, hammer and bottom metal retain over 75% blue showing scattered wear and handling marks. Breech block and top tang retain small amounts of case colored finish. Original wood finish has age darkened worn appearance showing scratches, dents and marks. Bore is generally bright showing scattered spots of light pitting. (01-21451/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
