“US” SURCHARGED REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA BELGIAN

MUSKET BY J. VALLET OF LIEGE. Cal. 70. NSN. The 45 1/2" barrel is pinned to stock and is stamped “B" & "G” separated by fluer-di-lis on top left flat of octagonal breech section. Lock is surcharged “US” on rebated tail and features serpentine cock, inset faceted pan, bridled friction frizzen and featherspring bulbous finial. Lock is engraved “J. VaLet”(?) “A. Liege” (Jean Vallet working 1762-80). Stock appears to be of Beech wood and features slight handrail comb and is iron mounted. Trigger guard has Charleville type finials and buttplate has stepped top tang. Stock extends to within 3" of muzzle and hickory ramrod is held by two rim turned iron pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: good, original flintlock configuration. All iron parts show slight cleaning to mostly silver-gray over considerable dark pits and some brown spots. "US" stamp looks to be correct, not a later restamp. Stock shows sanding and file marks and black epoxy repair or stabilization between barrel tang and lockplate, as well as to left side of tang. There is also some stabilization at front of lock mortice. There is also black epoxy repair to left barrel channel for 14" at muzzle along with repaired cracks on right. Dark rusted bore. Lock is good. (01-21383/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
