Unique Action Antique European Brass-Stocked Single-Shot Breechloading Boxlock Cartridge Pistol, unmarked but likely French or Belgian mfg., NVSN, .40 cal., 2-11/16'' octagonal barrel made without sights, behind which is a most unusual revolving breechblock that swivels to right when shotgun style under-lever is turned to the side; cast solid-brass fullstock has deep relief floral designs, boxlock action has a gracefully-shaped center-hung hammer and a folding trigger that automatically drops on cocking the hammer. Barrel may have originally been overall floral etched. This pistol fires an unknown type of cartridge, apparently having a primer tube that extends from the rear thru a hole in the breechblock; it is then struck by the falling hammer, perhaps being a variation of the pinfire or similar system. Condition is very good, the metal surfaces retain no original finish (may have been left ''in the bright''); the relief design stock is fine. Fitment is tight; action functions as designed; smoothbore is clean and bright with light overall frosting. This is a unique ''oddity'' pistol, certainly worthy of further research. Est.: $300-$500.
