VERY FINE CUSTOM MAUSER BIG GAME SPORTING RIFLE BY

THE NOTED GARY STILES. Cal. 338 Win Mag. S# 27088. The very talented Gary Stiles died in 2012, but he lives on in his exceptionally well crafted custom rifles like this example. The 24" lightweight bbl. is expertly machined, resulting in tapered octagon form w/ integral base for 3 folding, one standing leaf express rear sight as well as front ramp holding longitudinally dovetailed gold bead w/ flip up night bead. Ramp is cut for knurled sight protector. A sling eye is also integrally milled onto bottom flat. Top of bbl. is engraved "G. Stiles for Dr. P. Fenchak". Cal. is engraved on left side of bbl. shank. Model 98 action, most likely sourced from a 1908 Brazilian Mauser, is marked "DEUTCHE WAFFEN-UND" "MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN" on left sidewall. Rear bridge has been taken down & Talley scope bases installed. Bolt stop is nicely reshaped on top w/ checkered thumbpiece. Bolt w/ turned down & swept handle w/ pear shaped knob (checkered in 5 panels) has body engine turned. Model 70 style safety is installed in original shroud. A commercial trigger is also installed. Magnum bottom metal by Blackburn has dropbox & hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow. Pistol grip stock of very finely marbled & lightly figured European walnut measures 13 5/8" over black leather covered pad. Stock shows classic shaping w/ well carved shadowline swept right hand cheekpiece, raised platform under bolt stop, chamfered ejection port, steel grip cap & ebony forend tip w/ sm. widow's peak. Point pattern checkering is very finely executed & wraps around forend & has reverse curve to rear at grip. A sling eye matching that on bottom of bbl. is on toeline along w/ a vacant silver oval. Rifle is mounted w/ a Schmidt & Bender 30mm 1 1/2 -6x scope w/ 3 post & fine crosshair reticle. Scope is mounted in Talley type Q-D rings. Scope has rubber lens cover. WEIGHT: 10 lbs. 4 oz. (w/ scope). CONDITION: exceptionally fine. Appears to have been fired very little since being custom built w/ only a few very minor handling marks in all fine custom finishes. Bright shiny bore. Mechanically crisp. Scope is also excellent, optically clear. The perfect rifle for your next elk hunt. (21-4611/MGM). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
