12 BORE BOXLOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN BY JOSEPH CURRY WITH EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ENGRAVING & WOOD WITH CASE. Cal. 12 Ga., 2". S# 1837. Joseph Henry Curry was working at 24 Whittall St., Birmingham between 1936-40. It appears a gun maker of the same name was known to have been working at 10 St. Mary's Row at Birmingham Circa (1912). This gun has 26" dovetailed bbls. gold inlaid "FOR 2 INCH CASE ONLY" on narrow game rib. Tops of bbls. are engraved "Joseph Curry Gun Maker" "24 Whitthall St. Birmingham". Bbl. flats stamped w/ Birmingham nitro proofs for 2" chambers & 7/8 oz. of shot. S# is engraved on bottom of left bbl. Case hardened boxlock action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold) & dbl. triggers. Action shows above average filing w/ well-shaped bead around fences & sm. chevron as transition to thumbpiece on top lever. Action engraved w/ full coverage very nicely cut lg. open shaded scroll w/ acanthus & strapwork highlights. On sides of action, this fine work surrounds oval game scenes w/ pair of flying pheasant on left & ducks on right. "JOSEPH CURRY" is under each scene. A trio of feeding grouse are on top of blued trigger plate. Fences engraved in foliate motif. A pointing pointer is on trigger guard bow. S# is on short tang. Eye-catching, finely marbled and lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over checkered wood butt. Side panels have nicely shaped drop points & classic point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders is on semi-diamond hand. A silver oval on toeline is engraved "V. M. R. G.". Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: bbls.: bore diameter: right: .727", left: .731". Restriction: right: .033" (FULL), left: .039" (EXTRA FULL). Minimum Wall Thickness: right: .024", left: .021". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/8". DAC: 1 1/2". LOP: 14 1/4". CAST: approx. 1/4" off. WEIGHT: 5 lbs. 2 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun comes in a vintage tan canvas case w/ leather trim & brass corners lined in burgundy cloth. CONDITION: fine original essentially as found. Bbls. retaining approx. 85% original blue, silvering from case wear on tops of breech and muzzles, thinning on sides from normal hand wear. Action retains approx. 80% case hardening color. Thinning & browning around bottom & silver on fences. Top tang shows some flecking. Most of the original blue remains on top lever, floorplate & trigger guard. Stocks retain nearly all of what appears to be their original oil finish w/ some scattered light marks. Checkering lightly worn. Bores are bright & shiny w/ no evidence of any repairs or problems, except for very slight ping top of left bbl. about 12" from breech end. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case is good, exterior darkened w/ rubs & bumps. Straps & handle are good. Interior cloth is good. This is a lovely little gun. (21-4035/MGM). CURIO. $4,000-7,000.
