VERY FINE JOHN P. LOVELL DOUBLE BARREL PERCUSSION
SHOTGUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE & ACCESSORIES. Cal. 12 Ga. (18.4mm). S# 979. Bbls. 30 1/2" twist. Engraved on top rib "JOHN P. LOVELL MAKER BOSTON". Bottom of bbls. have various liege proofs & S#. Patent breeches are case hardened. Wood ramrod w/ brass capped worm & tapered brass tip held by 3 iron pipes. Locks & serpentine hammers are case colored. Locks engraved in block letters "JOHN P. LOVELL". Mounted on nicely figured burled walnut w/ fire blued trigger guard & buttplate. Wrist & forestock nicely checkered. Stock has single key w/ 2 oval German silver escutcheons & steel case colored nose cap/thimble which terminates in a stylized finial matching the forward finial of trigger guard. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: mahogany case is red velvet lined & compartmentalized for lg. cap tin, wood & brass 3 piece cleaning rod, ebony handled combination nipple wrench & oiler. Pewter "HAWKSLEY" oiler. Mainspring vise, powder flask & shot bag. Also found in case are 5 complete "ELEY'S IMPROVED PATENT WIRE CARTRIDGES" w/ orange paper labels & gauge marking "12". There is also an original 5 1/2"x3" 2 sided paper instructions for using these cartridges. Also in box is a blue paper wrapped lg. tin of "ELEY'S DOUBLE WATERPROOF PERCUSSION CAPS". Also in case are about a dozen paper wads & a mainspring vise. An accompanying note states this shotgun belonged to Enoch S. Johnson of Lynn Mass. around 1870. CONDITION: very fine overall. Bbls. retain most of their original striped brown finish. Breech retains much of its original case color. Locks retain most of their original case colors, though weaker on left side. Most of the fire blue is present on the trigger guard & bow. Case color on floorplate & thimble is mostly intact, though muted. Stock retains most of its piano polish varnish w/ sm. scuffs scattered on high points. Mechanically fine w/ bright shiny bores. Accompanying accoutrements all very good to fine. Casing is good, lining is soiled & faded w/ reductions. Hinges in need of repair. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Dan Poppen. (01-17341/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
