VERY FINE SOLID FRAME TRANTER'S PATENT PERCUSSION

REVOLVER RETAILED BY ALFRED CLAYTON OF SOUTH HAMPTON. Cal. 45. S# 3544. Blued solid frame is integral with 6" octagon bbl. Top strap is engraved "A CLAYTON, SOUTH HAMPTON". Pistol is fitted with "U" notch rear and tall bead front sights. Bbl. and five shot casehardened cylinder are stamped with London black powder proofs. Pistol is double action and has unique Tranter's patent cocking lever outside of trigger guard and firing trigger inside of guard. Pistol can be fired single action by cocking lever and using separate firing trigger or double action by pulling both triggers simultaneously. Action is engraved with 30% coverage sprays of well cut open scroll. Serial number is on right side. Trigger and removable loading lever fixed to left side are both stamped "W. TRANTER'S" "PATENT". Checkered walnut grip has steel cap. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pistol is housed in its original walnut case lined in green cloth. An Alfred Clayton label is in lid. Accessories in bottom compartment include: bronze two cavity bullet mold with iron sprew cutter stamped with this gun's serial number, wood and brass loading rod, James Dixon copper bodied powder flask, small pewter oil bottle, ebony handled nipple wrench with pricker, ebony handled turn screw, a tin of Tranter's bullets, and two empty tins of percussion caps, 1 with label "Eley's Superior". CONDITION: very fine. Action retaining over 80% original blue with sharp edge wear and some flaking. Casehardening color is faded on cylinder but remains around 80%. Grip is good with checkering lightly worn. Loading lever shows cleaning to bright silver. Case exterior shows some loss of original finish and a number of marks. Interior cloth is very fine. Label is lightly foxed. Accessories are generally very fine. An attractive example of this interesting revolver. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Kenneth Horn (Grandson of JC Higgins).
