VERY FINE W. & C. SCOTT & SON SM. BORE HAMMER THE
VICTORIA" GAME GUN W/ EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ENGRAVING & GOLD INLAY. Cal. 16 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 74323. (1905). Bbls. 30". "The Victoria" was a middle grade gun offered by Scott's in the mid 1880's & '90s & normally had a modest amount of engraving. This later sm. gauge steel barreled example is indeed a cut above w/ engraving approaching that found on "Excellentia" or "Premier" grades. It is also quite unusual in that it has flush gold inlaid scroll on tops of bbls. The 30" dovetailed steel bbls. are fitted w/ slightly raised flat matted pigeon rib engraved "SCOTT'S IMPROVED BOLT" at base of extension. Tops of bbls. are engraved "W & C Scott & Son" "The Victoria" on right & w/ Scott's address on left. Breech ends are gold inlaid w/ arabesque scroll on tops & w/ well cut triangles of scroll engraving on sides. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ Birmingham nitro proofs for 16 Ga. & 1 oz. of shot. Scott "winged bullet" logos are on each bbl. & bottoms of bbls. are stamped "2 3/4 SHELL" along w/ serial numbers. A sling loop is soldered to bottom rib which is also marked w/ importers name & address (Woodcock Hill). Case hardened top lever action features Scott's square bolt third fastener, side clips & double triggers. Action is nicely filed & fitted w/ front spring rebounding locks w/ rnd. bodied serpentine hammers. Action is engraved w/ near full coverage very nicely cut varying sized scroll which surrounds a number of game birds at sides & on bottom. A duck & snipe are on sides. Bottom portrays a pair of pheasant on ground, another taking wing in background & more snipe. An unidentified crested fowl is taking flight in semi relief on trigger plate. Lockplates have renditions of birds at front & dogs at rear w/ grouse & setter on left & w/ quail & pointer on right. A pheasant perches on tree limb on trigger guard bow. S# & Scott "castle" logo are on tang. Very finely mottled, nicely figured European walnut rnd. knob "Prince of Wales" pistol grip buttstock measures 14 3/8" over black leather covered pad. Point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders is at grip & partially surrounds gold inlaid shield at top engraved w/ the monogram "KF". A sling loop matching that on bbls. is on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: Bore diameter: R .668, L .667. Restriction: R .027 (IMOD), L .026 (IMOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .030, L .032. STOCK: LOP: 14 3/8". Stocks retain nearly all of a well done hand rubbed oil finish w/ some light subsequent marks, checkering competently recut. Pad is relatively new.
