VERY HEAVY FAYETTE COUNTY BENCHREST GUN FOR

TARGET SHOOTING. Cal. 50 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 40" signed in script “S SMITH” on top flat. Overall length 55". Has a 4 piece engraved brass patchbox w/ one piercing & percussion lock w/ dbl. set triggers. Lock stamped w/ initials “SM” on the plate. Stock appears to have been hand striped. The piercing in the finial of the patchbox is heart shaped. Gun has a silver saddle plate, as well as a 1 1/8" silver inlay behind the bbl. tang & a silver 8-pointed star on the cheekpiece. Samuel Smith was the son of Peter Smith, New Berlin, Union County PA. Gun dates to approx. 1830. CONDITION: wood cracking below patchbox & the lower side panel of the patchbox under the door is a replacement. The hand striping is worn off from wear in many places & there is a sm. 2 1/2" wood sliver missing along the bbl. behind the nose cap. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19530/RG).
