VERY NICE FLINTLOCK RIFLE BY GEORGE SMITH FROM NEW

BERLIN. Cal. 45 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 42" full oct. signed "G.S.". Overall length 58". 4 Piece brass engraved patchbox w/ 4 piercings. Incise carving forward & behind the cheekpiece, as well as around the bbl. tang. Flintlock appears to be early & original flint. George Smith (1795-1826) worked in New Berlin, PA. Researcher Dalas Ewing states George Smith was the “finest gunsmith who worked in the area”. Stock made of dark stained, curly maple. The incise carving behind the tang & cheekpiece appears to actually be in low relief. A fine early rifle from the upper Susquehanna area. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, lock & bbl. have smooth mottled brown/plum patina w/ light pitting at breech. Hammer is frozen & will not cock. Frizzen & frizzen spring screws appear replaced, possible reconversion. Lock is not removed. Lock needs internal adj., but seems to be all original. Bbl. is nicely initialed & stock shows no signs of alteration or repair. Crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19557/RG). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,000.
