VERY NICE INCISED CARVED FLINTLOCK JOHN PARKS

UNION COUNTY RIFLE. Cal. 50. NSN. Bbl. 43 1/4" signed “J * P”. Overall length 59". Has a 4 piece brass engraved patchbox w/ the characteristic upper Susquehanna “Q” finial & 9 piercings. The butt is profusely incised carved forward & rear of the cheekpiece which features a silver eagle inlay. There is a brass comb inlay & a brass saddle plate. The flintlock is signed Joseph Golcher & has dbl. set triggers. In 1833, Parks was living in center township, having lived previously Huntingdon & Clearfield Counties. CONDITION: very good overall, lock & bbl. have added brown color, probable reconversion. Bbl. initials, as well as the carving are sharp & clear. Stock is sound w/ noticeable insets just forward of lock, approx. 6x1/4" of wood has been professionally replaced on the right-hand side along the bbl. rear of the nose cap. Small inset on left side at nosecap & forward half moon silver escutcheon on left side replaced. Mechanics functional, discernible pitted rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing.
