VERY NICE JOSEPH LONG PERCUSSION KENTUCKY RIFLE.

Cal. 40 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 39 3/4" full oct. bbl. signed “JL”. Overall length 55". This curly maple Kentucky rifle has a typical Joseph Long 4 piece brass patchbox w/ 4 piercings. Gun is not carved but does have 16 silver inlays including man in the moon on cheekpiece. Bbl. is initialed in script “JL” w/ 5" weave engraved patterns around fixed rear sight & the percussion lock has dbl. set triggers. The rifle has the characteristic brass saddle plate. It has a 4 3/4" brass sideplate typical of the school. Joe Long worked in Snyder & Union Counties. He is listed in the 1826 tax list of Snyder County. CONDITION: single screw sideplate stripped & does not bind lock tightly, a very nice rifle having typical shrinkage crack at toe, point on one silver bbl. inlay is also broken off, otherwise the rifle shows no sign of restoration or alterations, mechanics need attention, hammer does not hold cock position, sharp discernible rifled bore.
