VERY NICE SWIVEL BREECH PERCUSSION CONVERSION

COMBINATION GUN BY STOEFFEL SMITH DATED 1821. Cal. 45 rifled bore. / 45 smooth bore. NSN. 54.5" overall, 39" oct bbls. This is a fine, original O/U swivel Kentucky made & signed on sideplate: “Stoeffel Smith 1821”. The gun has a nicely engraved 4 pc brass patchbox, curly maple stock. The bbls. are separated by full wood paneling w/ ramrod pipes one side & 6 brass inlays on other. Brass decorative scalloped panel along buttplate tang to toe on the left hand, 8.5" brass toeplate is engraved “FEB 23 1823”, full brass comb inlay, oval silver engraved thumb plate & silver engraved “man in the moon” on cheekpiece. Patrick Hornberger's recent book, Berks County Longrifles & Gunmakers depicts similar signed example of over/under still in flintlock. Smith (active 1790-1830) is believed to have been an apprentice of Wolfgang Haga in Berks County. CONDITION: very good overall. 2" Inset wood repair between the lock & the bbl. tang; 4" well patinaed sliver missing along the inlay side of wood panels 8" from the muzzle. Swivel mechanism is engaged by pressing forward section of 2 pc trigger bow, swivel operates but is loose & needs attention. There is no main spring tension, hammer appears to be a later replacement. Both rifled & smooth bbls. are very good. (01-19971/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
