VERY RARE & FINE FINE CASED FULL DAMASCENE COLT
3RD MODEL DERRINGER WITH UNIQUE IRON FRAME PICTURED IN “COLT ENGRAVING”. Cal. 41. S# 28783. Bbl. 2 3/8". This rare derringer is pictured & described in Larry Wilson’s 1974 “Colt Engraving”. This is the only known example w/ an iron frame, according to text. Otherwise standard configuration w/ 2 3/8" bbl. w/ half-moon gilt blade front sight. Mounted w/ Rosewood grips w/ S# to match. Sm. English proof on bottom of bbl. near muzzle, gold Damascene arabesque design code is virtually all metal surfaces including screws w/ exception of about 1" on bottom of bbl. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: French style fitted mahogany case w/ vacant oval German silver plaque is lined w/ red & green velvet compartmentalized for the derringer, pewter oiler, & cleaning rod w/ slotted tip. Bottom left portion of case has mahogany block containing 6 rimfire cartridges. (Casing is not pictured w/ derringer in Wilson’s book). 1999 Appraisal document. CONDITION: very fine overall, all matching, complete & original. Retaining virtually all gold Damascene decoration w/ only losses noted on tip of hammer spur. Well fit grips retain virtually all their original factory varnish. Exposed iron barrel has smooth plum/gray patina. Mechanically fine, bright crisp bore. Casing is also fine retaining 6 cartridges, fine pewter oiler, & fine cleaning rod. PROVENANCE: Glenn Giehart Collection (early collector of gold Damascene guns); "Colt Engraving" (p. 142) by R.L.
