VIRGINIA MADE CONFEDERATE SWORD WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD, CAPT. WILLIAM C. SCOTT, “GORDONSVILLE GRAYS” CO. C, 13TH VIRGINIA. 34” overall, 29.5” single edged blade with 5” sharpened top edge at tip, iron stirrup guard, bulbous oval wood grip with 2 ferrules, grip lightly spirally carved incised lines going in opposite direction. The guard is stamped 3 times: “FISHBACK & MOYERS / GORDONSVILLE / VA”. This is the only example known, there is also a single Confederate bowie knife with same marking. Knife is pictured in 2012 text “Confederate Bowie Knives” page 173 with some background on Waller Fishback & George Moyer principal in prewar chair factory and postwar iron foundry. This sword was carried by Captain William C. Scott, 13th Virginia, later Quartermaster in Army of Northern Virginia. The sword originally came from Stone Mountain Relics in 1980s purchased by family member of Capt. Scott. William C. Scott formed his own company “Gordonsville Grays” in 13th VA April 17, 1861. He resigned January 27, 1862 and accepted commission March 14, 1862, in Crenshaw Light Artillery. Battery camped August 1863 on his Farm near Gordonsville, VA while he was captain in quartermaster department. George W. Moyers maker of sword was sergeant in Captain Scott’s company. CONDITION: fine overall, blade is bright with original luster as made, scabbard is solid and supple retaining most its original polished finish & tooling, with chipping, sewn belt loop or frog is long gone.
