VERY RARE SPLIT GUARD BOYLE & GAMBLE FOOT

OFFICER’S SWORD WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD. Overall length" 36 1/2". Blade length: 31". A truly stunning blade for a Boyle & Gamble foot officer's sword with the expected unstopped fuller and etching over half of the blade that includes a spray of arms and a furled 1st National Confederate flag along with various foliate motifs. Instead of the normally encountered floral design hilt, this rarely seen coppery brass variant has a simple design of 2 branches spreading from the guard to the outside branch forming 3 large piercings. The pommel is as plain and unadorned as the guard. Grip retains its original leather covering and single copper wire wrap. Scabbard is a classic Boyle & Gamble of Richmond, Virginia design showing glued and sewn construction on the top edge of the leather body. Furthermore, their uniquely designed pinned brass mounts are indicative of Boyle & Gamble construction techniques. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing medium gray patina and the etching is quite clear and sharp for a Confederate sword. The hilt shows no notable damage and boasts a wonderful, deep rich mustard patina. The grip shows wear but is nearly completely intact. The wire is 100% and tight. The scabbard fits the sword exceptionally well and the patinas match completely. Leather remains strong but is slightly flexed and a bit flaked. The top mount is missing its pin. There are a few dents in the drag and it is also missing its attaching pins. (02-17887/BF). $8,000-10,000.
