VERY RARE THOMAS, GRISWOLD NEW ORLEANS CA
OFFICER SWORD. The unique pattern of which very few examples are documented are much larger than normal CS or US foot or staff officer swords, 33" long, 1.25" very wide blade with light indistinct etching. Classic New Orleans features: split seam pommel cap, 2 piece constructed knucklebow, pen-knife like ricasso, plain flat undecorated sides to quillon. The “CA” is in fancy script and possibly denotes “Crescent Artillery” of New Orleans. Scabbard is for display only and is well crafted New Orleans style recreation. CONDITION: good to very good overall, blade gray with long etched panels that nothing significant can be read, just floral and geometric designs. Point has small area of lamination showing quality of CS steel, several small nicks in cutting edge from use. The hilt is little loose as missing protective washer, someone has pushed a wood sliver along tang at base to tighten without diembling. Light mustard patina, Grip retains just tiny piece of original leather, rest has flaked off, but original twisted wire wrap sill retained. Recreated scabbard fits well. (02-17442/JS). $3,000-5,000.
