VERY SCARCE EARLY MODEL 1903 SPRINGFIELD BOLT

ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 358049. Bbl. 24". Rifle mfg. at the end of 1908. Bbl. date 11-08. Bbl. is also marked SA & flaming bomb. Correct features reflect this early mfg. date. Straight down bolt handle receiver has gas escape hole on right side. Later rear sight graduate to 2,750 yards w/ volley notch. Windage & elevation knobs are knurled & grooved. Windage knob is .450. Blade front sight w/ unmarked sheet metal cover. Milled upper & lower bands swivel is not present in lower band. Smooth narrow trigger. Smooth trap buttplate w/ nickel plated oiler. Letters on "cut off" have serifs. Safety has block letters. Walnut stock is marked "E" in cutoff recess. Marked w/ "S" at fore end tip. Faint boxed JFC inspectors mark on left side above trigger guard. Circle P script proof underneath grip. Left side of stock is straight along receiver. Hand guard is made flat forward of rear sight & w/out clips. CONDITION: metal parts of rifle have been coated in most areas w/ a grease like preservative which is in a hardened state. Sm. areas of the stock also have this preservative. Stock has light wear, staining & scattered handling marks but has otherwise good appearance. Metal appears to have traces of blue in protected areas turning gray w/ light wear & spots of oxidation. Bore is shiny w/ lightly worn lands (21-2455/RW). CURIO. $600-900.
