Cal. 41 Rocket Ball. S# 1298. Bbl. 16" oct. w/ integral mag. Loading is accomplished by turning the mag. shroud at the muzzle. Top flat is marked "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS COMPANY / PATENT, NEW HAVEN CONN FEB. 14, 1854". These rare carbines were built on the brass Navy sized pistol action. Blade front sight w/ replacement V notch rear sight. Right side of lever & right inside of lower tang have S# "1298". Left inside of lower tang has assembly # "102". Walnut replacement stock of straight grain walnut. LOP: 13 3/4" over original brass crescent buttplate. Butt of stock is marked w/ builder's name & "2021" date. Horris Smith & Daniel B Wesson patented the historic lever action repeater in 1854. In 1855, the name was changed to the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. In 1857, the company was reorganized as the New Haven Arms Company w/ Oliver F Winchester as an investor. The Volcanic is an iconic predecessor of the Winchester & played an important role in the development of modern firearms. CONDITION: bbl., shroud & lever have a dark patina appearance w/ scattered deep pitting indicative of fire damage. Brass receiver shows sm. dents & abrasive cleaning w/ some remaining dark tarnish. Sm. area of the original silver finish can be seen at the front edge on the left side of the receiver. Buttplate is cleaned bright. Action has weak mainspring tension. Dark pitted bore retaining largely intact rifling. (01-20029/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,500.
