Very Rare Civil War Allen & Wheelock 3rd Model Navy Lip-fire Revolver, NVSN, 6'' octagonal barrel with high dovetailed blade front and notched (topstrap) rear sights, marked ''Allen & Wheelock, Worcester, Mass./Allen's Pat's. Sept. 7, Nov. 9, 1858'' on left flat; undecorated round 6-shot cylinder; solid frame has removable cylinder pin at front, hinged loading gate at right, center hammer, hinged split trigger guard, integral guard spur and gripstraps, two-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. early 1860s in qty. of only 500 guns, with full-blued finish, case hardened hammer and trigger guard. Condition is fine, the barrel retaining approx. 85% smooth original deep blue, the balance of the metal being smooth light gunmetal gray but for muted case colors on hammer. Grips are sound showing overall nicks to finish. Action is strong and smooth but does not hold full-cock; bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. This is a very scarce Civil War-era revolver and considered to be a martial arm. Est.: $1,500-$3,000. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
