Very Rare Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1807 Flintlock "Indian Carbine", NVSN, .58 cal., 33.5" round barrel marked "P/(eagle head)/V" and "US" at breech; flat lockplate with long rear teat marked "US/(spread-wing eagle)" under pan, curved "Springfield" below, "1807" at rear, has reinforced cock with "curl" at top, integral pan, frizzen spring with spearpoint tip; brass furniture includes loop trigger guard having long rear tang, slightly-curved buttplate marked "1808" at top screw, serpentine sideplate, nosecap, three fluted ferrules retaining the trumpet-tip hickory ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock has raised aprons either side of lock, slim wrist with oval brass nameplate at top, rather high comb. Mfg'd ca. 1807-08, in only 1,202 qty. Condition is good having a deep brown patina with scattered oxidation to the iron surfaces, brass with moderate age tone. Stock is sound and smooth showing the expected marks of age and use, has secure 2" crack at back of lock, thru-hole drilled at lower ferrule (likely for a sling ring). Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration with unbushed touchhole and correct parts, "US" and "(eagle)" markings may have been intentionally obscured as "Springfield" is clear. Smoothbore may have been shot out (or bored) to .58 cal. from original .54 cal.; brass nosecap was doubtless added due to muzzle wear or damage, which may also account for slightly shorter barrel length. Edges and markings are mostly sharp, action is stiff, smoothbore shows overall moderate erosion. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
