Very Rare Civil War Lee Breechloading Rimfire Carbine, #2174, .44 RF cal., 21" round barrel/breech swings to the right for loading and manual extraction, marked "Lee's Firearms Co., Milwaukee, Wis./Pat'd July 22nd 1862" at left side; long receiver hinges at bottom-front, has central hammer that when cocked releases barrel, standing breech, integral loop trigger guard and upper and lower tangs; buttstock of oil-finished walnut has steel carbine buttplate; no forend. Mfg'd ca. 1864-65, in only a few hundred qty. Condition is fair retaining no original finishes; the barrel is dark and heavily pitted, both sights are missing parts; receiver is smooth with scattered moderate-to-heavy pitting obscuring 35% of the maker's name, address and patent date; buttstock is sound showing .5" filler and repairs at both sides at juncture with receiver, scattered dings, and a later coat of varnish. Action functions, barrel hinge is rather loose, bore shows moderate overall erosion and good rifling. A very rare Civil War carbine. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
