W. Collath "Wittener Excelsior" under lever, over/under combination rifle/shotgun. The top barrel is the 16 gauge with auto-ejector, 2 1/2' chamber, the bottom barrel is chambered in 9.3x80R. ((often designated as a 9.3mm Express "D" type rimmed cartridge) Pre war. 271/2" proprietary "Tesco" steel barrels, solid rib, choked IM on top barrel. Pop-up tang aperture sight, blade/brass bead front sight, two folding leaf sights on the rib. Bone Trigger Guard and break Lever. Bowtie Safety. Double Triggers with adjustable front trigger. Strong Action. Original wood Buttplate. Beautifully engraved with Stags, and Wild boar Game Scenes on the coin receiver sides and "Collath Sohne", Frankfurt A.O. on the edges. Stag also engraved on the upper tang. European walnut stock with checkering or the wrist & forearms, "prince of Wales grips, cheek rest and sling swivels, Bores are excellent/bright, strong rifling in the rifle barrel, re-blued lower barrel finish and plum colored upper barrel are about 98% with a few very minor scratches. Wood is very good/sound with many minor scratches/dings. LOP is 14". Wilhelm Collath became owner of his firm in 1870 and was one of the leading makers of rifles, sporting guns, and proprietary cartridges in all of Germany. He ran the Company with his sons Paul and Franz until his death in 1906 when his sons took it over. They kept the business going until 1941 when Frankfort was bombed early in World War II. Included with this lot are two boxes of 25 16 Ga. 2 1/2' RST shells, 4 boxes containing 64 9.3x80R 200 Gr. lead bullet cartridges. Also includes two issues of the Journal of German Gun Collectors Assn. magazines on Combination Guns and Collath Guns.
