Circa 1868-1880's Antique WILLIAM TRANTER PATENT Single Shot .22 RF “SALON” Pistol. Manufactured in London, England. William Tranter (1816-1890) was a British gunmaker and gun designer famous for inventing the Tranter revolver. Tranter is best known for the revolvers that were imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. This example has the top barrel flat inscribed with the retailer’s name "Cogswell & Harrison 142 New Bond St. London". Left frame marked "W. Tranter's Patent" with serial number. 8" tip-up octagonal barrel with fixed blade/notch sights, barrel release on underside of frame, one-piece checkered wood grips, spur trigger, automatic ejector actuated by opening the breech. British "UBP" under crown proof on the underside of barrel. (1868-1925) Floral engravings around the frame screws. The bore is very good/bright, good rifling, the barrel locks up tight, two-cock hammer action action is crisp, grip is very good and the finish has turned a gray brown patina with age, traces of blue are visible.
