TAKEDOWN LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH MADIS LETTER. Cal. 25-20 WCF. S# 848793. Sides of receiver have attractive full coverage vine type floral ornamentation with deeply acid etched background. Phil Klundt developed a style of acid etching that he presented to Winchester. Combination front sight, sporting rear sight & combination tang sight. Full length takedown mag. Forearm & hard rubber capped pistol grip stock of XXX fancy black walnut featuring style "H" factory checkering & crescent steel buttplate. Inside left of top tang is marked "17", triangular marking followed by assembly number "2066". Top tang channel of stock is stamped "85" followed by matching assembly # "2066". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: hand written letter by George Madis, noted author of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK". George states that he carefully examined this rifle and verified the original deluxe features. He talks of observing Winchester models 1892, 1894 & M12 shotguns with etched ornamentation & states that "Winchester produced very few etched guns and this was more of an experiment than a regular production run. Mfg. 1917. CONDITION: fine. Bbl. retains 90% lightly faded blue with sm. dents around sights. Action retains 70% blue showing edge & carry wear; most notable on bottom of receiver & takedown bbl. extension. Original wood finish shows handling & checkering wear with scattered scratches & marks. Stock is chipped left of top tang with hairline crack right of top tang. A Narrow gap is seen between the receiver & takedown extension, likely due to takedown adjustment. Bore retains sound rifling. (22-5465/DS). CURIO. $6,000-9,000.
