ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 4653. Bbl. 28 3/4". Breech end of barrel has "WWK" inspectors mark / "B" / "US" / navy anchor / "V"P" proof / American eagle "HN". Bolt, left side of receiver, cocking piece and breech end of barrel have "HN" inspectors mark. Second Model action is identified by safety on left side of receiver and magazine cutoff on right side to the rear of bolt handle. Internal tubular magazine in stock. Pinned blade front sight with graduated leaf rear sight. Button tipped steel cleaning rod. 2 Band walnut stock with steel musket buttplate. Left side of stock at heel has "SWP" cartouche with 1881 date. Toeline of stock has circle "P" firing proof. 999 Second Model Navy rifles were produced. Ordnance reports support the belief that military muskets and carbines were assembled at Springfield Armory from Winchester supplied actions. CONDITION: very fine, barrel and action retain over 80% dull lightly faded blue. Unsanded stock has age darkened original finish showing some small marks. Bright bore retains sharp rifling.
