WONDERFULLY HISTORIC 34 STAR GUIDON OF THE 1ST

MAINE CAVALRY. This scarce regulation guidon is a pattern that saw use from 1862 to the end of the Civil War. The flag confirms to the regulations for guidons measuring approx. 27" on the hoist and 41" on the fly. Measurements must be approximated because of the condition of the flag. The canton measures approx. 14" x 16" and has 34 hand painted gold stars on each side measuring approx. 1 1/4" from point to point. The construction of this flag is entirely silk and shows a mixture of hand and machine stitching. This flag was carried by the 1st Maine Cavalry and was obtained from the descendents of Clarence D. Ulmer. Private Ulmer mustered into Company D of the 1st Maine Cavalry on October 19, 1861. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant on July 1, 1862. On March 9, 1863 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 1st Maine Cavalry. He served in the 1st Maine until being mustered out at Petersburg, Virginia on August 1, 1865. Ulmer was born in 1840 at Rockland, Maine and died in 1915 in California. This flag and a book titled "The Campaigns of the 1st Maine and 1st District of Columbia Cavalry" by Samuel H. Merrill were obtained directly from his descendants. The book is 436 pages and was published by Bailey & Noyes of Portland, Maine in 1866. There are numerous notations in the book by Lt. Ulmer, as well as his descendants as the book passed from father to son.
UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: book titled "The Campaigns of the 1st Maine and 1st District of Columbia Cavalry". CONDITION: the flag is quite tattered and the silk has degraded. It is in grave need of restoration to save this extremely historic guidon of the 1st Maine Cavalry. The binding of the book is separated and partially repaired with red tape. It has been heavily read and is somewhat discolored. There are underlined passages and some pages have been written on by Ulmer and his descendants. (02-16742/BF). $5,000-10,000.
