WWI FRENCH/BELGIAN DAGGER FROM THE BATTLE OF
POELCAPELLE. This dagger measures 10 1/2" overall with a 5 1/4" blade. This intriguing dagger was made from shrapnel from an artillery shell, as can easily be seen by the hilt. The finely finished & polished blade is etched on one side with a French/Belgian soldier astride a wagon wheel & flag. He carries a rifle and is in full combat uniform with a helmet. He is surrounded by foliate motifs and the date “1918”. The other side of the blade is engraved with a large panel that reads “POELCAPELLE”. The hilt/handle is raw, unworked shrapnel. CONDITION: the dagger shows only light wear with no oxidation or damage. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18724-4/BF). $200-400.
