RIFLE ARSENAL MODIFIED TO SHORT RIFLE CONFIGURATION. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 344 RR. Bbl. 23 3/4". This rifle which was produced at the Erfurt Arsenal in Germany as a KAR 98 has been converted to resemble Spanish Model 43 Mauser features. Workmanship does not appear to be the high standards of a German arsenal. Sm. ring receiver is marked on top w/ Imperial German crown, "ERFURT" "1916". Marked on right side w/ Imperial proofs & marked on left side w/ Prussian eagle proof. Bolt handle appears to be straightened from original turned down style. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight w/ protective hood. Muzzle cover retaining tab has been removed. Rifle has been given a "Gew 98" type upper band w/ parade hook & bayonet bar. 12 1/2" cleaning rod. Original type lower band w/ bottom swivel; both bands are now retained by separate springs w/ filled area between band springs. Walnut stock set w/ hand guard has been shortened to approx. 3/4" beyond lower band. Buttstock w/ grasping grooves has original sling swivel mortice filled. Stock has added swivel at belly. Flat buttplate. Steel disassembly hole. Machined mortice for German type sling. CONDITION: stock set has wear, staining & handling marks throughout. Stock has approx. 3" crack on left side below receiver rail & two 2" cracks on the right side behind the recoil bolt. Metal has traces of blue turning overall gray w/ scattered areas of light oxidation & wear. Bore has worn lens & frosted appearance in grooves. (22-655/RW). CURIO. $300-500.
