BY DANZIG ARSENAL. Cal. 8 mm Mauser. S#. 5851b. All visible numbers match. Bbl. 23 3/4". These rifles were designed to replace early Model 1898 Carbine & have several unique features, including the sm. ring receiver, the relocation of the trigger assembly slightly forward, the permanently fixed protective ears for the front sight & the provision of a side sling which is more comfortable for use by cavalry, bicycle troops, etc. Receiver ring is marked on top w/ Imperial crown "DANZIG" & "1909". Right side of receiver ring has Imperial proofs; left side has Prussian eagle proof. Left receiver rail marked "KAR.98". Turned down bolt handle w/ flat checkered knob. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight w/ protective ears & retaining tab for muzzle cover. Sight base milled for protective hood. Bayonet bar & stacking rod are present. Hinged upper band. Lower band, retained by screw, has provision for side sling. Correct leather sling marked w/ S# "851"& "OK". Walnut stock set has worn acceptance marks at belly; 1 appears to be droopwing eagle & additional marking is "E". Steel disassembly disk. Flat type buttplate marked on tang "18.D.3.127" indicating service in a Dragoon regiment. CONDITION: original finish stock set has moderate wear, staining & handling marks throughout. Metal retains 60% original worn thinning blue w/ scattered areas of light oxidation & fine pitting. Fair worn bore turning dark. (22-645/RW). CURIO. $500-800.
