WWII 241ST (COMBAT) ENGINEER BATTALION COLORS.
3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on scarlet red field, traditional color for engineers since 1872. Philadelphia Quartermaster label is dated June 15, 1944. This command had its beginnings with the 31st Engineer Battalion, which itself began as the 31st Engineer Company that was activated at Fort Belvoir, Virginia on July 1, 1940. The unit was soon expanded and in December 1941 it was redesignated as the 31st Engineer Combat battalion. However, in April 1942, the designation was again changed after some reorganization to the 1st Battalion, 31st Engineers (Combat) and then in August it was reflagged as the 31st Engineer Combat Regiment. In March 1943, the regiment was broken up with its component units being redesignated as: 1st Battalion becoming the 31st Combat Engineer Battalion; the Headquarters and Headquarters and Headquarters and Service company as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1114th Engineer Combat Group; and the 2nd Battalion became the 241st Engineer Combat Battalion. This flag should date 1943-1945. In early June 1944, the 241st reorganized at Fort Belvoir (location of the Engineer School) and was then assigned to the Military District of Washington. In October, the unit was sent to Fort Jackson in South Carolina for its new home post becoming part of the Second Army, XXIII Corps. Finally, in May 1945, the unit was sent to Boston for shipment to Europe but with the notice of German surrender those orders were canceled. Instead, the battalion was sent to San Francisco for shipment to the Pacific Theater leaving there in late June 1945 and arriving at Manila in the Philippines in late July. Upon arrival they became part of the Sixth Army. With the war with Japan ending in August, the unit was no longer needed, and they were deactivated on December 29, 1945. CONDITION: very good to fine, staining (02-17547-16/JS). $100-200.
