GROUP. This group includes Howard’s olive drab gabardine uniform coat made by unknown tailor but having a “Regulation Army Officer’s Coat” label on the outside of the inner right breast pocket indicating the tailor’s strict adherence to government standards. The uniform coat was likely purchased early in the war prior to Howard’s overseas assignments. It no doubt saw several changes in insignia, patches & ribbon bars. The uniform coat includes a khaki dress shirt & a khaki tie. The sterling general’s stars are both pin back & identical in appearance, yet are different makers being Meyers & Donaro. The 9 award ribbon bars are sewn in place & include the Distinguished Service medal & Legion of Merit. This coat is configured to Howard’s role in 15th Army Group’s G-2 section serving during Austria’s occupation. His prior unit was 5th Army as indicated by patch on the right sleeve. General Howard remained w/ General Mark Clark through his entire service in Europe. Gen. Howard’s khaki uniform, trousers, overseas cap & belt are also included in this group. Uniform features a machine made 5th Army patch sewn to the right sleeve & boasts a 13 award medal bar that also includes the Distinguished Service medal, Legion of Merit & 5 high ranking foreign awards. The stars on the shoulders are marked “STERLING” & the tan overseas cap has a “BALFOUR” marked sterling star. There is no name written in the uniform or the overseas cap. Finally, the group is completed by a tan web belt & brass buckle. An unrelated khaki shirt & tie are included for display purposes. The group further includes his red General’s flag measuring approx. 52" x 40" w/ gold fringe & a central white star. A matching 48 star US flag measuring approx. 52" x 40" w/ gold fringe accompanies the General’s flag as do 2 yellow flag tassels. His personalized West Point yearbook, “THE HOWITZER” is included & is embossed in gold at the lower right corner of the cover w/ his full name. Also included is a USMA bullion blazer pocket patch likely from the 1950- 60s & 2 memorial cards from his funeral in 1993. Completing the lot are 2 framed photographs of Gen. Howard taken in Europe. General Edwin Britain Howard graduated from the United States Military Academy w/ the Class of 1923. Upon graduation, Howard began his military career in the 10th infantry, followed by several other assignments in this country as well as the Panama Canal Zone & Hawaii. He attended Command & General Staff School prior to America’s entrance into WWII. In October 1941, Howard was assigned to duty as Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, General Headquarters, USA; Chief of Statistics Division, HQ Army Ground Forces in March of 1942, then assigned to II Corps in England, ACS, G-2. He landed in North Africa w/ II Corps & served there until Jan. 1943 when he joined 5th Army as ACS, G-2 under Mark Clark. Howard was promoted to Brigadier General on August 28, 1944. His Awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, ETO Campaign, American Defense medal, WWII Victory medal, American Campaign, WWII Army of Occupation, French Croix de Guerre, Order of the British Empire, Italian Valor Militaire, as well as other foreign medals. An impressive group for an important officer on General Mark Clark’s staff in WWII. CONDITION: uniforms show very light wear w/ very light moth damage in a few scattered areas. General’s flag shows wear & some reinforcing. 48 Star flag has separations to the silk in various places. Other items show light wear. (02-15739 /BF). $2,000-3,000.
