WWII GERMAN FRAMED VETERAN GROUP INCLUDING CREW

MADE KNIGHT’S CROSS, SINKING PENNANT, BUTTONS & BREAST EAGLE. This framed group was put together in 1987 for loan to the Canadian Veterans Museum Association. It was obtained by the consignor at a deaccession sale in Canada. The frame measures 29 1/2" x 23 1/4" & contains a truly spectacular crew made, Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. It is likely that the captain was awarded the Knight’s Cross while on patrol & clever, industrious members of the crew made him a Knight’s Cross from onboard materials to wear. The Cross appears to be made of hammered & machined metal with a neck ribbon created from a 2nd Class Iron Cross ribbon & cloth tape with a 4 hole, sew on button. The Cross has not been examined out of the frame but appears to be unquestionably original. The pennant measures approx. 17" x 8 3/4" & is made of cotton canvas fabric dyed red with “8,000” stitched to the pennant. The group further includes 3 naval buttons, an enlisted breast eagle & a period magazine in a folder on the back of the frame. The frame also contains copies of U-boat photographs from the period. CONDITION: the Knight’s Cross shows expected wear & the neck ribbon has some staining. The pennant has scattered holes & is quite faded. The buttons, eagle & magazine show light wear. PROVENANCE: Lifetime Collection of Dennis Ottaway. (02-16037/BF). $1,200-1,600.
