WWII GERMAN NAVAL OFFICER'S EVENING DRESS UNIFORM

COAT & VEST BELONGING TO KORVETTENKAPITAN CARL EMMERMANN. Uniform coat is of an extremely fine dark navy wool fabric with 4 gilded anchor buttons down each side of the front of the coat. There is an additional pair of buttons connected by a chain used to hold together the front of the uniform. At the left breast is a single sewn on ribbon bar for a long service medal with a silver eagle. Below the bar are 2 pairs of loops to support badges. The right breast has a high relief bullion eagle sewn below the first button. Each sleeve has a sewn on bullion star with a 1/2" gold bullion tape above & below a 1/4" gold bullion tape. Jacket lining appears to be black rayon with cream colored rayon lining the sleeves. Below the collar is a tailor’s label that reads, “Seit 1859 Th. Thol KEIL”. Inside the interior right breast pocket is a tag that reads, “TH. THOL, KIEL [9.4.37](typed) GEGR. 1859 [8007](typed) Herrn [Leutnant z.S. Emmermann](typed)”. The vest is also extremely fine, dark navy wool with a single row of 4 black composite buttons closing the front. The rear of the vest is black rayon with a small 2 tongue frame buckle for size adjustment. The interior is lined with white polished cotton. Kapitan Carl Emmermann joined the Navy in 1934 after completing schooling & training. He served in various capacities throughout the war but his most famous command was U172 with his first patrol commencing on April 24, 1942. U172 was sunk on Dec. 13, 1943 in the mid-Atlantic, west of the Canary Islands. Kapitan Emmermann was responsible for sinking 27 allied ships totaling 152,904 tons. After U172 was sunk, he became commander of the 31st U-boat Flotilla. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross in Nov. of 1942 & the Oak Leaves in July of 1943. Among his many awards are the U-boat Badge with diamonds & the U-boat Front Clasp. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of information pertaining to Kapitan Emmermann & his service. Also included is a white shirt & bow tie for display purposes. CONDITION: uniform & vest both show very light wear with no notable damage. PROVENANCE: Lifetime Collection of Dennis Ottaway.
