FROM EUGENE SAMUEL MCGILL. According to the markings inscribed of the scabbard & written on a hang tag Eugene McGill served on a battleship USS Iowa. The Japanese bayonet scabbard is inscribed w/ a number of battles & campaigns from Pacific Theater. The inscriptions although partially enhanced in white are somewhat difficult to read & the former owner recorded them on a hang tag. The 15 1/2" fullered blade bayonet is marked on the right ricasso w/ the Kokura Arsenal marking. Curved quillon. Birdshead pommel. Smooth hardwood grips retained by 2 screws. Blue steel scabbard w/ inscriptions. CONDITION: bright blade turning dull w/ scattered peppery oxidation. Balance of metal parts have traces of blue turning patina w/ wear and light oxidation. Scabbard retains 50% original worn blue turning patina w/ light oxidation & fine pitting throughout. PROVANANCE: from the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18435/RW). $100-200.
