'Mississippi Rifle' 1850 dated U.S. military muzzle loading percussion rifle known for it's use in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Features a 33" barrel, brass blade front sight, dovetailed rear sight with 'v' notch, original rear sight removed, empty dovetail, this one installed behind it, smooth trigger, steel ram rod, brass furniture, and smooth walnut straight grip stock with brass buttplate & patch box. Marking s on lock "E. WHITNEY/US" & "N.HAVEN/1847." (Feint) Stock stamped with a large "3" on the lower left buttstock. The barrel has turned a brown patina, the furniture displays an aged brass patina and the lock & hammer bear a dark grey/brown patina. Two-cock action is sound, the bore is dark/rough and the wood stock shows age with some losses around the barrel & cracks around the action. The right wrist has been repaired with sheet metal and nails, appears very old. the brass front barrel band and the sling swivels are missing. The patch box contains a old hand written note stating the rifle was bought in 1941 and handed down through the family to the present consigner. It also states the rifle was used in the Civil War and last shot on Dec. 24th, 1928. Rifle has seen hard use.
