Whitney-Howard Thunderbolt 20 Ga NVSN
Scarce Whitney-Howard "Thunderbolt" single barrel lever-action shotgun, circa 1866-68. Unusual action that slides the bolt back on the bottom of the frame for loading a single shell. Working the lever also cocks the action, and closing it readies for fire. Ultimately, the action proved not to be strong enough, and production ceased with only about 200 shotguns being produced. One source states only 11 known examples exist. Marked on the right side of barrel, " Whitney Arms Co, Whitneyville, Conn", and left side, "Charles Howard Patents of Sept 26 and Oct. 10 1865 and May 15 1866" 30" barrel, Bead sight. Crescent buttplate. smoothbore appears very good/bright. Blued finish is turning A gray/brown patina. Traces of blue remain of the buttstock. Barrel markings are faint, but readable. Wood is very good, and has been re-finished. Action works well. There is an old braise repair to the triggerguard. A very scarce American made firearm. NRA Condition-Near very Good. Antique Firearm.
