Whitney U.S. Model 1861 Muzzle Loading Percussion "Plymouth" Rifle, #NVSN, .69 cal., 34" barrel, metal is "in the white", walnut stock, small blade front sight, and "V"-notch long range rear sight; graduated to 1000 yards. These rifles were requested by Capt. John A. Dahlgren for the U.S. Navy and named after his ship, the U.S.S. Plymouth; some were also used by the Infantry. The lockplate is marked "(eagle)/U.S./WHITNEYVILLE" and "1864". Top of the barrel is marked "1863" and bayonet lug is marked "131". Ramrod is full length and the bottom threads are worn. Finish was cleaned to "white"; barrel has scattered dark spots and light pitting at the nipple area; buttplate is brown with rust patina. Stock is unmarked and shows moderate use, with scattered scratches and dents. There is chipped wood in the rod channel behind the upper band. Action works properly. Bore and rifling are very good. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
